Greenacre named Phoenix assistant coach

May 22, 2013 - 8:26 PM Former Wellington Phoenix striker Chris Greenacre has been named the club's assistant coach for a second A-League season.

Englishman Greenacre has been retained to work under newly appointed head coach Ernie Merrick for the 2013-14 campaign.

The 35-year-old assisted former coach Ricki Herbert last season and took over the top role for the bottom-placed club's last six games when Herbert resigned in February.

Greenacre didn't apply for the vacant head role but has got his wish to remain as an assistant and to continue learning the coaching trade.

He says he is pleased the Phoenix board showed faith in him and believes he can help former Melbourne Victory coach Merrick make a quick transition.

"I had a little taste of the head coaching role at the end of the season and enjoyed it, but I know I am not yet ready for that position," Greenacre said.

Merrick says he was impressed by Greenacre from the moment he met him.

"For me being a coach is more than just coaching, it is about pulling everyone together and I know Chris will be an important part of that.

"He helps people, has an honest and open personality and good communication skills."

Greenacre is on target to complete his A level coaching licence in July.

His playing career in England spanned 15 years, representing multiple clubs before he arrived in Wellington in 2009 for the first of three A-League seasons.

He scored 19 goals in 84 games for the Phoenix before ending his playing career in July last year.
