Bayern completes treble with Pokal Cup win over Stuttgart
Jun 1, 2013 - 8:01 PM Berlin, Germany (Sports Network) - Bayern Munich capped a historic season on Saturday with a 3-2 win over Stuttgart in the final of the Pokal Cup, becoming the first Bundesliga team to capture the treble. After winning the Bundesliga title by a comfortable 25-point margin, Bayern captured the Champions League crown with a 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund last weekend.
That left Saturday's Pokal Cup as the final hurdle, and Bayern jumped out to a 1-0 halftime lead when Thomas Muller converted a 37th-minute penalty kick after Philipp Lahm was brought down inside the area by Stuttgart's Ibrahima Traore.
Lahm also had a hand in Bayern's second goal when he set up Mario Gomez in the 48th minute to double the advantage for the champions.
Gomez netted his second goal of the contest in the 61st when he swept home Muller's pass inside the area, and it looked like Bayern was well on its way to another trophy.
But Stuttgart didn't go quietly as Martin Harnik scored from Gotoku Sakai's pass 10 minutes later before Harnik found the net again when he scored on the rebound after Shinji Okazaki's shot hit the crossbar.
The goal set up a nervy final 10 minutes for Bayern, but the Bavarians held on for the historic victory.
No one has shouted yet.
