Newell's crowned champions of Argentina
Jun 19, 2013 - 7:18 PM Buenos Aires, Argentina (Sports Network) - Newell's clinched Argentina's Clausura title on Wednesday without taking the field as second-place Lanus fell to a 2-0 defeat at Estudiantes.Lanus was the only team with a chance of preventing Newell's from winning the league, but the club needed to overturn a two-goal deficit in the final 45 minutes on Wednesday in a match that was abandoned 10 days ago because a fan was killed outside the stadium in clashes with police.
Estudiantes took a 2-0 lead into Wednesday's match courtesy of goals from Leandro Desabato and Duvan Zapata eight minutes apart, and they were able to hold off any challenge from Lanus, which had Guido Pizarro sent off in the final minute.
With only one round of matches left to be played this weekend, Newell's has clinched its sixth title by holding a six-point lead on both Lanus and River Plate.
Newell's will close out its campaign on Sunday at home against last-place Arg. Juniors.
