Williams shoots for Heart trophies

Mar 22, 2014 - 5:56 AM Melbourne Heart's first signing of the Manchester City era says he'll win a trophy before his contract is out.

David Williams this week put pen to paper on a two-year contract extension that will take his stay at Heart until 2017.

The livewire forward - who sits on top of the A-League scoring charts - says while there was interest from other clubs it was a "very, very easy" decision to re-sign.

"It's a club I really want to be a part of - I don't want to be a part of another A-League club," Williams said.

"I want to be part of something exciting and I believe we can win something in the next couple of years," he said.

"I came down here to win something in the first place and haven't done it... hopefully in the next two we're going to really take off."

His comments will likely continue to fuel speculation that Melbourne's second team will start next season as more than big improvers but title fancies.

Having appointed John van `t Schip as their coach to lead the City revolution, there are likely to be many more faces through the door in the off-season.

Not that they've closed the book on this season just yet.

Heart are not out of the finals race but are likely to need four wins from their last four games - beginning with the visit of Central Coast Mariners on Sunday.

In the Heart's favour, Van `t Schip has a full book of players to choose from - a luxury at this time of year.

By contrast, Mariners boss Phil Moss has five out injured and travels south after a tiring mid-week Asian Champions League excursion to Beijing.

Yet to confirm their own finals spot, Moss will have circled this one "must win" seeing as the Mariners haven't won interstate since November and have three interstate trips left.

The Mariners were spirited in defeat on their last visit to Melbourne - a 3-1 defeat to Victory earlier in March - and will be determined to avoid the unlucky losers tag that was fixed to Heart last year.

Asked about Heart's finals chances, Williams expressed the sentiment that both coaches would surely endorse.

"I'd rather get the three points rather than play pretty football at this stage," he said.
