China book spot in women's WC quarters

Jun 21, 2015 - 1:32 AM Wang Shanshan scored the only goal to book China a spot in the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Cameroon.

Despite a spirited challenge by the 53rd-ranked African newcomers, the 16th-ranked Chinese made it to the last eight for the sixth time.

Defender Wang got the only goal at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium after 12 minutes when she picked up pass from Li Dongna who did well to control a Wang Lisi corner.

It was the second goal of the tournament for the 25-year-old, and sent the last remaining African side crashing out of the tournament.

The Chinese, runners-up in 1999, next play the United States or Colombia next Friday for a place in the semi-finals.
