Spurs sign Ajax's Sanchez in record deal
Aug 18, 2017 - 5:31 PM Tottenham have broken their transfer record to make the club's first signing of the summer, bringing in Colombia centre-back Davinson Sanchez from Ajax for a fee that could rise to EUR42 million euros ($62m).The move for the 21-year-old Sanchez was subject to a medical examination and securing a work permit, Spurs said. He signed a six-year deal.
"It is a great move for me to come here to develop my career," said Sanchez, who was Ajax's player of the year last season in his first year at the Dutch club following his move from Atletico Nacional in Medellin.
Tottenham had been the only English Premier League team yet to make a signing this summer, and sold Kyle Walker to title rivals Manchester City.
The transfer continues the break-up of the Ajax team that reached the final of the Europa League last season, losing to Manchester United 2-0 in Stockholm. Captain Davy Klaassen has also left, along with coach Peter Bosz.
Tottenham host Chelsea on Sunday in the first-ever Premier League match to be played at Wembley.
Spurs will play their home games at England's national stadium this season while their new stadium is being built.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino has challenged his players to make Wembley home and insists their poor record at Wembley has nothing to do with the unfamiliar surroundings.
Pochettino's side had a woeful record there last term as they played their ill-fated Champions League campaign under the arch, losing to Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen before beating CSKA Moscow having already been eliminated.
"Wembley is not a problem. We are the problem if we don't win like last season," he said.
"It is the most exciting place to play football. It is where football is born. For me, in Argentina and Spain, Wembley was a big dream and now a possibility to play there every two weeks, or maybe every week, or maybe three times in one week.
"There's no excuse. OK, it was difficult to move from White Hart Lane to Wembley and it was a perfect excuse for everyone. Now it's not an excuse."
