Moratti backs Ronaldo recovery

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti believes AC Milan striker Ronaldo can overcome his latest career-threatening injury because he has beaten similar problems in the past.

The former Inter star ruptured tendons in his left knee during Wednesday's 1-1 draw against Livorno and underwent surgery in Paris on Thursday.

The 31-year-old Brazilian is expected to be sidelined for at least nine months.

While at Inter, Ronaldo suffered the same injury but on his right knee and finally returned to play after 20 months.

"I hope Ronaldo returns to play as soon as possible, although at this time you can consider the injury as career-threatening, just as it was in 2000," Moratti said. "But in him there's a significant mental strength and a strong physique.

"Moreover, the doctors know him and he knows this path as well, hence it should be easier."

However, Gerard Saillant, the same surgeon who operated on Ronaldo when he suffered the injury eight years ago, believes his age could have an impact on his full recovery.

"Considering his age and the fact that he is eight years older than the last injury, it is difficult to say when he can return to playing," Saillant said.
