Portsmouth wins FA Cup
May 17, 2008 - 4:42 PM By PA SportsTickerLONDON (Ticker) - Nwanko Kanu's first-half goal proved to be the difference as Portsmouth won the FA Cup for the first time in 69 years Saturday with a 1-0 victory second-division challengers Cardiff City.
In what was an exciting contest, the Premier League side broke through in the 37th minute when Kanu put a shot past Finnish goalkepper Peter Enckelman. Kanu had earlier hit the post.
It was the 11th 1-0 win of the season for Portsmouth, who earned a place in next season's UEFA Cup.
Cardiff, the fifth team from footbal's second tier to meet Portsmouth in the FA Cup this season, rarely threatened after an opening burst and the Premier side used a stifling defense in front of goalkeeper David James.
