PUERTO ORDAZ, Venezuela (Ticker) - Venezuelan midfielder Jorge Rojas on Monday announced that he is joining the New York Red Bulls.
The 30-year-old, who was playing at Giants Maracaibo, confirmed he has already inked an 18-month contract to become the third Venezuelan to play in the MLS.
The other two are Giovanni Savarese, who played at New York MetroStars, New England Revolution and San Jose Earthquakes, and current Columbus Crew forward Alejandro Moreno.
"I signed my contract last Thursday or Friday and I'm flying to New York on Monday," Rojas told www.lavinotinto.com.
"I must join the team on Tuesday. I'm very happy because I have another opportunity to play abroad," said Rojas, who played at Ecuador's Emelec and Colombian giant duo Nacional and America. "When I was abroad, I succeeded. I was champion. Now, it's time to reply the confidence of the coaching staff and the board. I hope I can repeat previous achievements."
Rojas might make his debut on July 19 against Los Angeles Galaxy.
"It will be a good measure to see how my conditions and my form are," Rojas said. "I will have 15 or 20 days to prepare myself for that match.
"They are new experiences. It's a league I will play at for the very first time, different football, and I hope I can keep doors open for more Venezuelans abroad and especially in the United States."
