David Villa celebrated his new contract with a goal in Valencia's 3-0 win over Real Mallorca in their Primera Liga season-opener on Saturday.

The Spain striker, who penned a six-year deal at the Mestalla in midweek, put the hosts on the way to victory in the 35th minute.

Juan Manuel Mata and substitute Vicente Rodriguez added further goals either side of halftime as Unai Emery's side got its campaign off to the perfect start.

Espanyol recorded an opening-day victory for the first time in seven seasons as it posted a 1-0 triumph at home to Valladolid.

Luis Garcia's second-half strike proved decisive as the the hosts managed to hold on to their slender lead.

It was revenge for the Barcelona-based side, which had lost to Valladolid on the opening day of last season.
