FC Dallas will receive allocation money in return.
Thompson has recorded three goals and one assist in 13 games - four starts - for Dallas this season.
Since he was selected by Dallas in the second round of the 2005 MLS draft, Thompson has notched 14 tallies and 11 assists in 69 career games.
