Red Bulls re-sign D Mendes

Jan 7, 2009 - 7:46 PM SECAUCUS, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New York Red Bulls on Wednesday re-signed defender Carlos Mendes, who has spent the past four seasons with the club.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"During his time with New York, Carlos has proven himself to be a sound defensive player," said Red Bulls sporting director Jeff Agoos. "He brings stability and versatility to our lineup and his contributions to the team extend beyond his performance on the field."

Originally signed to the club's senior roster in 2005, the New York native has appeared in 95 matches for the Red Bulls, starting 81.

He played in 17 games last season when the Red Bulls reached the MLS Finals, where they lost to the Columbus Crew, 3-1.

Mendez came off the bench to start the team's series-clinching win over the Houston Dynamo in the Western Conference semifinals, then started in the Western Conference championship and MLS Finals.
