Ferrero moves on in Rome

May 13, 2012 - 7:41 PM Rome, Italy (Sports Network) - Former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero was among Sunday's first-round winners at the fifth ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event of the year -- the Internazionali BNL d'Italia.

Ferrero beat South Africa's Kevin Anderson 6-4, 7-5 on the red clay at the beautiful Foro Italico.

The 32-year-old Ferrero has advanced to the second round of a tournament for the first time this year. He captured the Rome title in 2001.

Mikhail Youzhny of Russia took down Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in a two-hour match featuring 10 service breaks.

Italian wild card Paolo Lorenzi outlasted Russian Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Andreas Seppi of Italy defeated Denis Istomin 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Serbia's Viktor Troicki claimed a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Italian wild card Filippo Volandri. German Florian Mayer got past Milos Raonic of Canada by a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 margin.

Two-time winner Novak Djokovic dethroned then-champion Rafael Nadal in last year's Rome finale. Nadal is a five-time champion here.

The 2012 Rome titlist will earn $595,000.
