Jankovic bows out in Brussels

May 21, 2012 - 7:08 PM Brussels, Belgium (Sports Network) - Former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic was a first-round upset victim Monday at the $637,000 Brussels Open, a final clay- court French Open tuneup.

Capable Romanian Simona Halep humbled the sixth-seeded Serbian Jankovic 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) at Royal Primerose Tennis Club.

Other Day-1 upsets were avoided when fourth-seeded Slovak Dominika Cibulkova doused rising American Christina McHale 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 and 10th-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova dismissed Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko, 6-4, 6-4.

Additional wins came for Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova and Belgian wild card Alison Van Uytvanck.

The top seeds this week are world No. 3 Pole Agnieszka Radwanska and former Wimbledon runner-up Marion Bartoli of France.

Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki, who is not defending her title this week, beat Chinese Peng Shuai in last year's Brussels finale.

The 2012 champion will collect $107,000.
