Serena, Federer highlight first day at French Open

May 25, 2013 - 7:06 PM Paris, France (Sports Network) - Former champions Serena Williams and Roger Federer will highlight Sunday's first day of play at the 2013 French Open.

The only Grand Slam event that begins on a Sunday will feature 16 first-round matches in both the men's and women's draw.

Williams, the top seed and 2002 women's champion, will face Anna Tatishvili of Georgia in the second match on Court Chatrier. The American superstar enters the tournament on a career-best 24-match winning streak with titles in each of her last four events -- Miami, Charleston, Madrid and Rome. However, she was a first-round loser last year at Roland Garros, falling to Virginie Razzano to suffer her first-ever opening-round loss in a Grand Slam championship.

Federer, meanwhile, enters the fortnight without a title of any kind in 2013. He captured the 2009 French Open crown -- the only one Rafael Nadal hasn't won in the last eight years -- to complete a career Grand Slam and will play Sunday as this year's second seed on Court Chatrier against Spanish qualifier Pablo Carreno-Busta.

David Ferrer, a semifinalist last year, is the only other men's top seed in action Sunday. The fourth-seeded Spaniard will face Australia's Marinko Matosevic.

Other top women on Sunday's schedule include 2012 runner-up Sara Errani, 2008 champion Ana Ivanovic and Venus Williams.

Errani, who lost to Maria Sharapova in last year's final, is seeded fifth this year and will take on Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus. The 14th-seeded Ivanovic will open play on Court Chatrier against Croatia's Petra Martic and Williams will meet Poland's Urszula Radwanska.
