Kirilenko wins; Ivanovic ousted in Eastbourne

Jun 17, 2013 - 7:18 PM Eastbourne, England (Sports Network) - Sixth seed Maria Kirilenko advanced, while former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic was an opening-round upset victim Monday at the $690,000 Aegon International tennis event, a final grass-court Wimbledon tune-up.

The Russian Kirilenko handled Serb Bojana Jovanovski 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, while the seventh-seeded Serbian Ivanovic succumbed to Russian Elena Vesnina 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 at Devonshire Park.

In some other first-round action, Britain's Heather Watson humbled American Varvara Lepchenko 6-3, 6-4, former Wimbledon runner-up Marion Bartoli of France foiled Italian Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-2, and Belgian Yanina Wickmayer doused American Christina McHale 6-3, 6-4. Bartoli was the Eastbourne champion two years ago.

Tuesday's schedule will feature matches for top seed, 2012 Wimbledon runner-up and 2008 Eastbourne winner Agnieszka Radwanska, Australian Open runner-up Li Na, former Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova, and former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, who titled here back in 2009. Kvitova was the 2011 Eastbourne runner-up to Bartoli.
