Black, Huber win U.S. Open doubles title

Sep 7, 2008 - 7:16 PM FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- An already good week got better for Cara Black on Sunday as she teamed with Liezel Huber to win the women's doubles final at the U.S. Open.

The top-ranked tandem turned away No. 10 Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), in the championship match to claim their eighth title together this season.

A native of Zimbabwe, Black also won the the mixed doubles title here on Thursday with teammate Leander Paes of India.

It is the first U. S. Open title for Black and Huber, who saved two set points in the decisive tiebreak and won the final four points of the match en route to the win and $420,000 prize money.

"I'm not sure whether I should sing the anthem, do a cartwheel, or tell you guys to vote, but I'm the proudest American right now," Huber, a South-African born American, told the crowd after the match.

This marked the fifth Grand Slam women's doubles title overall for Black, while Huber picked up her fourth.

Raymond, 35, was bidding for the sixth major doubles championship of her career and third with Stosur.
