Wozniacki advances, Medina Garrigues upset in Tokyo

Oct 2, 2008 - 12:25 PM TOKYO (Ticker) -- Caroline Wozniacki cruised into the quarterfinals on Thursday. Anabel Medina Garrigues wasn't as lucky.

The top-seeded Wozniacki steamrolled to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Japan's Ayumi Morita at the AIG Japan Open while second-seeded Medina Garrigues suffered a 6-1, 7-5 upset to unseeded Samantha Stosur of Australia.

A native of Denmark, Wozniacki needed 71 minutes to oust Morita and keep her hopes alive for a third title this season. The world No. 16 claimed championships at Stockholm and New Haven this year, but was upset in the first round in her last two tournaments.

Medina Garrigues, who beat Wozniacki in Beijing last week, won't get another shot at her at this $175,000 hardcourt event.

The Spaniard struggled against Stosur, failing to earn her second consecutive quarterfinal berth and fourth in her last six events.

Stosur, who lost to then-No. 33 Maria Kirilenko in the final at Seoul last week, next will face eighth-seeded Aleksandra Wozniak. The Canadian routed Japanese qualifier Ryoko Fuda, 6-1, 6-1, to book a spot in her fourth quarterfinal this season.

Also advancing to the round of eight on Thursday was Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic, who posted a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Italian Jarmila Gajdosova, and Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova - a 6-2, 6-4 winner against Japan's Rika Fujiwara.

First prize is $28,000.
