Wozniacki stays hot at Kremlin Cup

Oct 8, 2008 - 11:14 AM MOSCOW (Ticker) -- Caroline Wozniacki is showing no signs of slowing down.

Wozniacki continued her impressive late-season run on Wednesday, posting a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 upset of eighth-seeded Russian Anna Chakvetadze in the first round of the Kremlin Cup.

The 18-year-old Dane captured the title at the Japan Open on Sunday, earning her third career championship - all which have come in the last seven tournaments.

After winning titles at Stockholm and New Haven, Wozniacki had a respectable showing at the U.S. Open, advancing to the fourth round before losing to then-No. 2 Jelena Jankovic, the top seed at this Tier I event.

However, Wozniacki fell off in her next two tournaments, suffering defeats in her first two matches at Tokyo and Beijing. Her return trip to Japan was much more successful and helped her build momentum entering this $1.34 million hardcourt tournament.

Despite dropping the first set against Chakvetadze, Wozniacki rallied from behind to stay perfect in two career meetings against the Russian.

Wozniacki next will face Russian Nadia Petrova, who cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory against compatriot Anna Lapushchenkova in the final first-round match.

In second-round action, third seed Russian Elena Dementieva escaped with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2) triumph over qualifier Katarina Srebotnik of Slovakia. Dementieva, the defending champion, awaits the winner of the Wozniacki-Petrova meeting.

First prize is $196,900.
