Nestor, Zimonjic clinch No. 1 ranking

Nov 16, 2008 - 3:18 PM SHANGHAI, China (Ticker) -- Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic clinched the year-ending No. 1 ranking Sunday after posting a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 victory over Bob and Mike Bryan in the final of the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup.

The Canadian-Serbian duo snapped the American Bryans' brother three-year hold after joining forces at the start of 2008.

"It's a great feeling," said Nestor, who had finished No. 1 with former partner Mark Knowles in 2002 and 2004. "We had a great year. At times a little inconsistent. But when we played well, we've been very tough to beat. We really got on a roll. I think when we're playing well, we're deserving of the No. 1 ranking."

After failing to win a title in their first 10 events, Nestor and Zimonjic enjoyed a huge stretch in which they reached six finals and won four titles. The run was highlighted by a victory at Wimbledon, which completed a career golden Slam for the 36-year-old Nestor.

The Bryans had been looking to finish No. 1 in doubles for a record fourth consecutive year and fifth time overall.
