Mercury rout Sparks to advance
Aug 25, 2014 - 3:32 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brittney Griner netted 21 points and the Phoenix Mercury steamrolled the Los Angeles Sparks, 93-68, on Sunday to advance to the Western Conference finals.Griner not only shot a perfect 9-for-9 from the floor, but also threw down an impressive two-handed jam midway through the third quarter for the first dunk in WNBA postseason history.
Penny Taylor and Candice Dupree had 17 and 16 points, respectively, in the lopsided victory. Phoenix, which set a league record with 29 wins this season, will next face the defending champion Minnesota Lynx.
The win gave the top-seeded Mercury a 7-0 mark against the Sparks this year. Phoenix was 3-1 against the Lynx during the regular season.
Candace Parker scored 21 points for Los Angeles, and Nneka Ogwumike donated 14.
Griner opened the game with two free throws and a layup, and Phoenix never looked back. Dupree's jumper three minutes in made it 14-4 and the Mercury led 30-14 after the first quarter.
Phoenix led by as many as 30 in the fourth quarter.
