Monarchs sign Brunson, Powell

Mar 3, 2008 - 9:55 PM SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- The Sacramento Monarchs on Monday signed both All-Star Rebekkah Brunson and fellow forward Nicole Powell to four-year contract extensions.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

"We feel that Brunson and Powell are one of, if not the best 3-4 forward combinations in the WNBA," Monarchs general manager John Whisenant said. "Powell is a great 3-point shooter, while Brunson is a rebounding power forward. By signing these two we not only build on our future, but we'll be able to compete with the very best in the WNBA."

Brunson is coming off a stellar season, averaging 11.5 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.3 steals over 33 contests. Brunson also finished with a league-best 3.9 offensive rebounds per game last season.

"I am excited about remaining with the Monarchs organization and staying in Sacramento," Brunson said. "I think we have a young and talented team, as well as exceptional fans, and look forward to being a part of another competitive season in Sacramento."

Powell scored a team-high 12.8 points per game last season. She also led the WNBA in free-throw shooting percentage at 96.4 percent.
