PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Phoenix Mercury center Tangela Smith is expected to miss four to six weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on her right knee, the team announced Tuesday.
Smith is third on the team in scoring, averaging 11.1 points. She leads the team in rebounding at 7.9 boards per contest.
"I hate to lose Tangela for a few weeks while she rehabs from the surgery, but knew that it was something that needed to be done and, in the long run, it is the best decision to keep her healthy," Mercury coach Corey Gaines said.
Smith is one of just eight players in WNBA history to record 4,000 career points and ranks eighth on the league's all-time scoring list.
