Jones, Sun weather Storm

UNCASVILLE, Connecticut (Ticker) -- Asjha Jones scored 20 points and Amber Holt added 15 to lead the Connecticut Sun to an 80-76 victory over the Seattle Storm on Sunday.

Jamie Carey added 12 points - including a pair of free throws in the closing seconds - to help the Sun (19-10) to their sixth straight triumph and a two -game lead over the Detroit Shock in the Eastern Conference.

Former University of Connecticut star Sue Bird scored 24 points to lead Seattle (19-10). Bird, who was a member of the gold-medal winning United States women's basketball team in Beijing, was 10-of-20 from the field and added two assists and a pair of steals.

Swin Cash, another former UConn standout, added 16 points off the bench for the Storm, who were without star forward Lauren Jackson, who had surgery to her right ankle last week.

In Sunday's other game:

CHICAGO 82, DETROIT 81 (OT): At Chicago, Candice Dupree scored 24 points and added eight rebounds and seven assists to lead the Sky to an overtime victory over the Shock.

Dupree hit two free throws with 47 seconds to play to make it 82-79. Katie Smith missed a 3-pointer for Detroit that would have tied the game in the closing seconds and the Sky held on for their third straight victory.

Despite coming out on the losing end, Smith did reach a personal milestone as she scored 23 points to lead Detroit and reach the 5,000-point plateau.

Smith becomes the third player in WNBA history to reach 5,000 points. She has 5,022 points and is behind only Lisa Leslie (5,853) and Tina Thompson (5,281) on the league's all-time scoring list.
