WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Ticker) -- Former NFL kicker Mike Vanderjagt kicked a pair of fourth-quarter field goals to lead the Toronto Argonauts to a 23-16 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the season-opener for both teams.
One of the most accurate kickers in NFL history and a former Saskatchewan Roughrider, Vanderjagt signed with Toronto on May 31 after being out of work since being cut by the Dallas Cowboys in 2006.
With the Argonauts (1-0) holding a 17-16 lead in the fourth, Vanderjagt drilled a 49-yard field goal with 11:13 remaining, and then added another 44-yarder with less than a minute to play.
Michael Bishop, who alternated with Kerry Joseph at quarterback, finished 6-of-14 for 111 yards. Bishop connected with running back Jamal Robertson for a 53-yard score to put Toronto up 7-6 in the second.
