REGINA, Saskatchewan (Ticker) -- Marcus Crandel threw a pair of scores and Wes Cates rushed for two touchdowns as the defending Grey Cup Champion Saskatchewan Roughriders opened their season with a 34-13 thrashing of the Edmonton Eskimos.
Crandel completed 19-of-29 passes for 278 yards, connected with D.J. Flick and Adarius Bowman for scores. He also threw a pair of interceptions. Flick caught a 33-yard score in the first that put the Roughriders ahead, 6-3.
Cates carried 14 times for 86 yards and scored from 10 yards out with 9:01 left in the third quarter to give Saskatchewan the lead for good at 15-10. Bowman's 73-yard touchdown catch made it 27-13 with 8:06 remaining in the game and Cates added another 12-yard TD run with 2:14 left.
