Roughriders name Etcheverry defensive coordinator

Jan 26, 2009 - 8:08 PM REGINA, Saskatchewan (Ticker) -- Gary Etcheverry, who joined the Saskatchewan Roughriders last season as a defensive assistant, was named the team's defensive coordinator Monday.

Prior to the 2008 season, Etcheverry last coached in the CFL in 2004, when he was the defensive coordinator with the Ottawa Renegades. He spent 2002 as the head coach of the Toronto Argonauts.

He also spent 16 years coaching in the United States collegiate ranks, including stints at the University of San Diego, University of Redlands, San Francisco State, Occidental University and Macalaster College.

"He brings a wealth of experience, wisdom, and creative insight to our team," Roughriders head coach Ken Miller said. "We are very confident that coach Etcheverry and his defensive staff will ensure the Riders continue to have one of the top defenses in the CFL."
