White Sox's Getz to have sports hernia surgery

Sep 30, 2009 - 9:34 PM CLEVELAND(AP) -- Chicago White Sox second baseman Chris Getz will have surgery for a sports hernia on Friday in Philadelphia.

Getz, a rookie, has been bothered by an oblique strain since early August. He spent three weeks on the disabled list and played in 18 games in September before the decision was made to do the surgery before the season ended.

Getz hit .261 with two home runs and 31 RBIs in 107 games this season. He also stole 25 bases in 27 attempts and made seven errors.

Getz is expected to be ready when spring training opens.

The surgery will be done by Dr. William Meyers, who performed a similar procedure on Cleveland outfielder Grady Sizemore in early September.
