Twins 1B Morneau named AL Player of the Month
Jun 5, 2007 - 12:22 AM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau on Monday was named National League Player of the Month for May.The 26-year-old Morneau hit 10 homers, batted .380 and collected 29 RBI for the Twins, who went 13-14 in the month.
The reigning AL MVP had a slugging percentage of .667 and scored 21 runs. He compiled a 10-game hitting streak from May 13-27.
This is the first career AL Player of the Month award for Morneau, who had three multi-homer performances in the month.
Boston Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis finished second in the voting after batting .402 with six home runs and 22 RBI in May.
Other players considered for the award were Mark Teixeira of the Texas Rangers, Detroit Tigers teammates Magglio Ordonez and Gary Sheffield and Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners.
