Twins 1B Morneau named AL Player of the Week
Jul 11, 2007 - 9:05 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau was named the American League Player of the Week on Wednesday.The reigning American League MVP batted .438 (14-for-32) with four home runs and 13 RBI this past week.
In a four-game series against the Chicago White Sox leading into the All-Star break, Morneau went 9-for-18, including a three-homer, six-RBI game on Friday.
This is the first time the honor has been given to Morneau, who played in Tuesday's All-Star game after batting .295 with 24 home runs and 74 RBI during the first half of the season.
Fellow Twins' players Jason Kubel, Joe Mauer and Matt Garza also were nominated for the award. Three Seattle Mariners - Adrian Beltre, Jose Guillen and Jarrod Washburn - received consideration as well.
