Punishments handed out for Brewers-Pirates brawl

Apr 22, 2014 - 8:39 PM New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Major League Baseball on Tuesday announced multiple suspensions stemming from Sunday's bench-clearing brawl between the Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Brewers backup catcher Martin Maldonado drew the largest penalty, a five-game ban, after he leveled Pirates outfielder Travis Snider with a vicious right cross to the face during the main scrum. Snider will be sidelined for two games for his role in the fracas.

Milwaukee outfielder Carlos Gomez, who precipitated events by flipping his bat and standing at home plate to admire a ball hit off Pirates starter Gerrit Cole during the third inning, drew a three-game suspension. He has decided to appeal the ruling.

Pittsburgh catcher Russell Martin received the lightest sentence, as he'll be required to sit out only one contest.

Each of the four players were hit with undisclosed fines.

The remaining suspensions are due to take effect as of Tuesday night, unless further appeals are forthcoming.
