Pirates IF Sanchez has shoulder surgery

Sep 28, 2007 - 1:54 PM PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Freddy Sanchez underwent right shoulder surgery, the team announced Friday.

Surgery on Sanchez's acromioclavicular (AC) joint was performed by Pirates medical director Dr. Patrick DeMeo at Allegheny General Hospital.

The team announced that the procedure went as anticipated and that Sanchez will need six to eight weeks to return to full health. The surgery likely will have no impact on Sanchez's offseason conditioning program, and he is expected to be completely healthy for spring training in 2008.

Sanchez, who won the National League batting crown in 2006 with a .344 average, played in 147 games this season for the Pirates and batted .304 with 11 home runs, 81 RBI and 77 runs scored.
