Red Sox place Matsuzaka on DL

May 30, 2008 - 8:24 PM BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- The Boston Red Sox placed righthander Daisuke Matsuzaka on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a mild strain of the rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

Matsuzaka left Tuesday's game in Seattle after four innings with what was described as a tired shoulder.

The Japanese-born righthander is 8-0 this season with a 2.53 ERA. Matsuzaka went 15-12 last season for the Red Sox, helping Boston win the World Series.

Boston purchased the contract of first baseman-outfielder Jeff Bailey from Class AAA Pawtucket to take Matsuzaka's roster spot. Bailey went 1-for-9 in a brief three-game stint with the Red Sox last season, his only appearance in the majors.

The Red Sox have not yet announced who is going to take Matsuzaka's turn in the rotation on Monday.
