BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Red Sox made official Tuesday evening what had been announced a day earlier - David Ortiz was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a torn ECU tendon sheath in his left wrist.

The four-time All-Star injured the wrist on a swing in the ninth inning of Saturday's game against the Baltimore Orioles, and an MRI on Monday in Boston confirmed the tear.

The move, retroactive to Sunday, leaves the Red Sox without a slugger who leads the team with 13 home runs and 43 RBI and has finished in the top five in AL MVP voting each of the last five seasons.

Ortiz's wrist has been placed in a soft cast.

In a flurry of other activity, Boston recalled righthander Justin Masterson from Class AAA Pawtucket to start Tuesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. The 23-year-old has made two starts for the Red Sox this season, allowing a total of two runs in 12 1/3 innings.

The club also optioned first baseman Jeff Bailey to Pawtucket and recalled first baseman Chris Carter.
