Red Sox DH Ortiz homers in first rehab game

Jul 18, 2008 - 2:00 AM BOSTON (Ticker) -- Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz homered in his first rehab game Thursday, going 1-for-3 with a walk for Class AAA Pawtucket.

After popping out against Toledo's Virgil Vasquez in the first inning, Ortiz hit a 1-2 pitch from the righthander just over the wall in right field at McCoy Stadium to give Pawtucket a 1-0 lead. The blast ignited a seven-run inning in which Ortiz later ended with a lineout to first base.

Ortiz has been on the disabled list since June 3 with a partially torn tendon sheath in his left wrist, sustained on a swing on May 31 in Baltimore.

The slugger is expected to be in the lineup for Pawtucket for three more games and then play another three contests with Class AA Portland before joining Boston on July 25.

Ortiz is batting .252 with 13 homers and 43 RBI in 54 games with the Red Sox this season.
