Red Sox recall RHP Masterson

Jul 20, 2008 - 8:17 PM BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Red Sox on Sunday recalled righthander Justin Masterson from Class AAA Pawtucket and placed David Aardsma on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right groin.

Masterson will be in uniform Sunday night when the Red Sox face the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the finale of a three-game series.

The 23-year-old Masterson has made nine starts for Boston this season, going 4-3 with a 3.67 ERA while limiting opponents to a .206 batting average. He was sent to Pawtucket on July 6 to be converted into a reliever and has allowed two runs and two hits while striking out four in 3 1/3 innings over three appearances.

Masterson held righthanded hitters to a .170 average in the majors.

Aardsma is 3-2 with a 2.75 ERA in 38 relief appearances this season.
