Cardinals claim LHP Manning from Nationals

LOUIS (Ticker) -- The St. Louis Cardinals claimed pitcher Charlie Manning off waivers from the Washington Nationals on Wednesday.Manning made his debut with the Nationals this past season, posting a 1-3 record with a 5.14 ERA in 57 appearances. The 29-year-old southpaw struck out 37 batters in 42 innings, limiting lefthanded hitters to a .203 average.
To make room for Manning on the 40-man roster, first baseman Josh Phelps was designated for assignment.
