Phillies name Mackanin bench coach

Nov 21, 2008 - 4:50 PM PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - The Philadelphia Phillies on Friday hired Pete Mackanin as their bench coach.

Mackanin replaces Jimy Williams, who quit shortly after the team won the World Series.

Sam Perlozzo, who was hired by the team last week, was named the third base coach. He replaces Steve Smith, who was fired.

Mackanin, 57, served as a scout for the New York Yankees this past year. He had managed the Cincinnati Reds for the final three months of the 2007 season, guiding the team to a 41-39 mark.

In 2005, Mackanin also was interim manager for the Pittsburgh Pirates for the final 26 games of the season.
