Pirates, C Doumit agree on three-year extension
Dec 22, 2008 - 8:18 PM PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates and catcher Ryan Doumit on Monday agreed to a three-year extension, according to multiple reports.Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that it is worth $11.5 million and includes a club option for 2012 and 2013. The club option for both years will have to be exercised or rejected after 2011.
Pittsburgh avoided arbitration with Doumit, who received a huge raise from the $412,000 he earned last season.
That salary turned out to be a bargain for the Pirates. The switch-hitting Doumit was one of the better hitting catchers in baseball, batting .318 with career-highs of 15 home runs and 69 RBI and a .357 on-base percentage in 116 games.
A second-round pick in 1999, Doumit has hit .278 with 36 home runs and 153 RBI in 335 games with Pittsburgh.
