Lakers still waiting for MRI on C Bynum

Feb 1, 2009 - 10:48 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers will have to wait until Monday to receive the MRI results on center Andrew Bynum, who suffered a right knee sprain in the first quarter of Saturday's 115-98 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies.

The 7-foot center had his knee examined Sunday in New York but, according to the Los Angeles Times, Dr. David Altchek was out of town and has not had a chance to review the MRI.

The Lakers, who are in the midst of a six-game road trip, take on the New York Knicks on Monday.

Bynum fell to the floor after a scramble and was subsequently helped to the locker room with assistance. X-rays were negative.

"I have to be optimistic," said Bynum, whose season ended at around the same point last season after he dislocated the kneecap on his opposite leg. "I just want to get back as soon as possible."

He is averaging 14.2 points and 8.4 rebounds this season.

"Hopefully, it's nothing too severe and he can get back soon and pick up where he left off," Lakers guard Kobe Bryant said.

Bynum played in 45 games last season after he suffered a partially dislocated kneecap when he landed awkwardly on teammate Lamar Odom's left foot in a January 13, 2008, game - coincidentally against Memphis.
