Jayhawks pull away for 66th straight home win

Dec 30, 2010 - 5:19 AM Lawrence, KS (Sports Network) - Thomas Robinson scored 20 points to go with 10 rebounds as No. 3 Kansas pulled away late and downed Texas-Arlington, 82-57, in the inaugural meeting between the schools at Allen Fieldhouse.

"Thomas at halftime had five offensive rebounds and the rest of our team had two," said Kansas head coach Bill Self. "Thomas did a really nice job on the glass. In the second half our other players started rebounding the basketball."

Markieff Morris had 14 points and Marcus Morris added 13 for the Jayhawks (12-0), who host Miami-Ohio on Sunday. Elijah Johnson contributed 11 points and five assists as Kansas won its 66th straight home game.

Bo Ingram poured in 20 points for the Mavericks (5-6), who have dropped five in a row. Cameron Catlett had 10 points in a losing cause.

"First of all, this was an unbelievable experience, said UTA head coach Scott Cross. "(Allen Fieldhouse) is definitely the best environment I've ever played in. I thought our guys played about as well as we could have played in the first half. We really stuck to the game plan, ran the clock down, we got good looks off of our flat ball screens, I was really proud of them."

Shaqui White-Miller's jumper early in the second half had the Mavericks within 40-35, but the Jayhawks assumed control with a 15-2 run thereafter.

Robinson hit a free throw then added a dunk to get the ball rolling, Travis Releford connected from long distance to open up a 13-point advantage, then Johnson drained a trey to end the run at 55-37 with 12:34 to go.

Richardson's layup cut the visitors' deficit to 58-46 less than two minutes later, then a 19-4 burst by the home team ensued. Markieff Morris notched nine points during the clip. Robinson capped the surge with a steal and a slam to make it 77-50 for Kansas with 3:14 to play and the Jayhawks cruised home.

"All teams should get better now, but the thing is, you don't get better unless everybody is in one accord and one mindset about what is important," Self added.

Incredibly, the visitors hung tough throughout the first half, forging an 11-11 deadlock after Bryant Smith's layup seven minutes in, then going ahead 18-13 with 10:39 to play in the opening 20 minutes after Ingram hit a deuce.

The Jayhawks awoke and ripped off the next nine points to assume a four-point cushion, then broke out to a 32-22 lead with 3:23 remaining on a Robinson layup.

The Mavericks got within 36-28 at the break from a Catlett lay-in.

Kansas improved to 7-0 at home this season thanks to 50.9 percent shooting, including 55.2 percent in the second half...The Jayhawks won the battle of the boards, 41-25, and held the Mavericks to 38.7 percent shooting in the second half.
