Bays and Boilermakers bounce Zips
Mar 22, 2014 - 8:25 PM West Lafayette, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Whitney Bays finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds as the fourth-seeded Purdue Boilermakers took down the 13th- seeded Akron Zips 84-55 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Mackey Arena.Courtney Moses and April Wilson each had 12 points for Purdue (22-8), with Wilson also tallying nine assists. Dee Dee Williams tacked on 11 points for the Boilermakers, who will face fifth-seed Oklahoma State next.
Rachel Tecca netted 18 points and Kacie Cassell handed out 11 assists for Akron (23-10).
Purdue built up a 46-34 lead at halftime by shooting 46.3 percent from the floor, including a 5-of-13 effort from beyond the arc, in the first half. Akron connected on an even 40 percent from the field in the same time.
The Boilermakers pulled even further away after halftime, when they shot 65.4 percent from the floor. The Zips had only six field goals in the final 20 minutes.
Purdue secured 50 rebounds and outscored Akron 42-30 in the paint.
