Brady headlines NFL Players of the Month
Nov 1, 2007 - 9:14 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) - Tom Brady's second month of the season was just as good as his first.The New England Patriots quarterback, who was named AFC Offensive Player of the Month in September, again was awarded the honor for October on Thursday.
New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Month, while a pair of defensive ends - Aaron Kampman of the Green Bay Packers and Jared Allen of the Kansas City Chiefs - were named the Defensive Players of the Month for the NFC and AFC, respectively.
Philadelphia Eagles kicker David Akers won the NFC Special Teams Player of the Month for October and Tennessee Titans kicker Rob Bironas was honored in the AFC.
Brady set a league record for touchdowns in a month, tossing 20 as he led the Patriots to a 5-0 record in October. The two-time Super Bowl MVP set a career high with six touchdown passes at Miami on October 21 and has already surpassed his previous career-high of 28 TDs in a season by throwing for 30 scores through the first eight games.
It is the second career as well as second consecutive Player of the Month award for Brady, who has completed 198 passes for 2,431 yards with a 74.2 completion percentage this season.
Jacobs led the NFL with 424 rushing yards during October, helping the Giants post a 4-0 record for the month. The three-year pro recorded the first three 100-yard rushing performances in his career and scored two touchdowns during the month as well.
It is the first career Player of the Month award for Jacobs, who is the third Giants running back to be honored - joining Tiki Barber and David Meggett.
Kampman had an NFC-best 5 1/2 sacks in three games during the month for the Packers. The defensive end tied a career-high with three sacks in Green Bay's 19-13 victory at Denver on Monday.
In his sixth season, the Player of the Month award is Kampman's first in his career.
Allen notched 16 tackles, six sacks and one forced fumble as he helped the Chiefs to earn a share of first place in the AFC West. The four-year pro had 2 1/2 sacks in Kansas City's 27-20 victory over Cincinnati on October 14.
Allen's eight sacks lead the AFC and rank second in the league as he earned his first career Player of the Month award.
Akers led the NFC with 31 points scored in October, converting three field goals in all three of the Eagles' October contests.
In his ninth season, it is the second career honor for Akers, who is the only player in franchise history to win a Special Teams Player of the Month award.
Bironas made an NFL-record eight field goals in a win against Houston on October 21 and went 13-of-14 during the month. The Titans kicker accounted for 45 of his team's 81 points as he helped Tennessee to a 3-1 record for the month.
It is the first career Player of the Month award for Bironas.
