Giants-Pats TV rating makes history
Feb 4, 2008 - 7:24 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The New York Giants' monumental upset of the New England Patriots was the most-watched Super Bowl in history, according Nielsen Media Research on Monday.The game attracted 97.5 million viewers, surpassing the previous record of 94.08 million viewers set in 1996 when the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In fact, Sunday's broadcast was the second-most watched television program in American history. The "M-A-S-H" finale in 1983 drew 106 million viewers.
There were plenty of storylines surrounding Sunday's game, with the biggest the Patriots trying to become the NFL's first undefeated team since the Miami Dolphins in 1972.
In a close game throughout, the Patriots' failed in their bid for perfection as Eli Manning directed a late-scoring drive to lead the Giants to a stunning 17-14 victory.
