EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Plaxico Burress already has his first score of the 2008 season.

Hours before the Super Bowl champion New York Giants were slated to start the season, Burress signed a two-year contract extension with the club on Thursday.

Financial terms were not disclosed for Burress, who had three years remaining on his contract.

Burress, who had been unhappy with his contract, has been hampered the entire summer by a nagging injury to his right ankle.

"We always remained hopeful that it would get done before the start of the season," Giants general manager Jerry Reese said. "It came down to the last few minutes and we're happy to get it done so we can move forward in our season.

"Plax is happy to get the contract done as well. It took a little longer than we expected it to take, but Plax was professional about it the whole time."

Arguably one of the club's most important players, Burress led the team with 70 receptions for 1,025 yards and a career-high 12 touchdowns last season, despite being unable to practice virtually the entire season because of a sprained ankle.

Burress capped off a memorable 2007 season by hauling in the winning touchdown pass with 35 seconds left to play that lifted the Giants to a stunning 17-14 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

In his first three seasons with the Giants, Burress has 209 receptions for 3,227 yards and 29 touchdowns.
