Giants place Super Bowl hero Tyree on IR
Nov 5, 2008 - 8:42 PM EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- David Tyree, who made one of the most spectacular plays in Super Bowl history, will not see the field this season. The New York Giants placed Tyree on season-ending injured reserve Wednesday.
The move came just nine months after Tyree made a dazzling 32-yard reception which led to the winning touchdown in New York's 17-14 victory over the previously unbeaten New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.
However, Tyree never saw the field this season. He was placed on the physically unable to perform list prior to training camp due to a knee injury, and suffered a hamstring injury once he was eligible to practice in mid-October.
"Yeah, really the medical people feel like he is still a ways away," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "When we started the season on PUP (list), we felt that at some point in time he would be ready to go. And the unfortunate part of this is over the three-week period when we could utilize and he could build up and condition and do all of the things necessary, he was really unable to do that for the majority of the time because of the hamstring issue."
Tyree, a backup wide receiver and special teams standout, cemented his legacy with the Giants with his performance in the Super Bowl.
With the Giants driving for the go-ahead touchdown in the final minutes, Tyree leaped high to snare a pass from Eli Manning and, with Patriots safely Rodney Harrison draped all over him, managed to press the ball against the top of his helmet as he crashed to the ground on his back.
The catch already has been mentioned as one of the greatest plays in Super Bowl lore, and sparked one of the biggest upsets on the NFL's grandest stage.
A sixth-round pick who made his name primarily on special teams, Tyree also caught a 5-yard scoring pass in the Super Bowl.
No one has shouted yet.
