Giants DE Tuck gets fine rescinded

Nov 8, 2008 - 4:51 AM NEWARK, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The NFL on Friday rescinded the $7,500 fine it levied on New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck for his roughing-the-passer penalty on Sunday.

The league fined Tuck earlier in the day, but according to the Newark Star-Ledger NFL commissioner Roger Goodell watched the tape for the first time and decided the fine was too harsh.

Tuck was penalized in the third quarter when he tackled Dallas Cowboys quarterback Brooks Bollinger as the backup threw an interception.

Sixth in the NFL with 8 1/2 sacks and has 36 tackles this season, Tuck was unhappy with what many observers considered a questionable penalty and was planning on appealing the fine.

But Goodell stepped in before it got that far.

"The officials are instructed to err on the side of safety," Ray Anderson, the NFL's executive VP of football operations, told the newspaper.

"Therefore, we support the call on the field. However, as you know, most penalties do not require a fine. A fine was not justified."
