Giants RB Jacobs kept out of practice

Nov 19, 2008 - 10:15 PM EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs was kept out of practice Wednesday due to swelling in his right knee that limited him to only two second-half carries in last week's 30-10 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

The bruising 260-pound running back underwent an MRI exam Monday that revealed no structural damage in the knee. New York coach Tom Coughlin is hopeful that Jacobs will be able to practice Thursday.

"We expect that he will be able to go tomorrow," Coughlin said. "As you know, these things are day-to-day. He feels good and I hope in another day he's made the progress necessary to allow (him) to practice tomorrow."

Jacobs said he was held out of practice more for "precautionary" reasons.

"Coach wanted to hold me out today," Jacobs said. "I'll get some snaps tomorrow and see how I feel. Today I took off to rest it some more, but I feel good, to be honest with you."

Jacobs insisted the injury was not as severe as the knee sprain that caused him to miss three games last season.

"The last time I had this injury I couldn't walk the next day and I was out for three weeks," he said. "This year it's just a nagging thing that's been there, but I don't think it will hold me out."

Coughlin did not seen concerned that Jacobs could miss Sunday's contest at Arizona (7-3).

"He's played through a lot of nicks before and has come right out and played the following week," Coughlin said.

Jacobs seemed well on the way to becoming the first running back in 29 games to run for 100 yards against the Ravens, who came into Sunday boasting the NFL's top run defense.

But he was not needed in the second half after the Giants (9-1) scored on their first three possessions to open a 20-0 lead and finished with 73 yards on only 11 carries.

Closing in on his second straight 1,000-yard season, Jacobs is the NFL's fourth-leading rusher with 879 yards.

Giants cornerback Aaron Ross also missed Wednesday's practice with a hamstring injury.

Hopefully, he will practice tomorrow as well," Coughlin said.

Ross was named the Defensive Player of the Week after recording two interceptions, including a 50-yard return for a touchdown, and six tackles against the Ravens.
