Sydor to replace Letang in Game Three

May 28, 2008 - 4:50 PM PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- Looking for a spark, Pittsburgh Penguins coach Michel Therrien announced veteran defenseman Darryl Sydor will replace rookie Kris Letang in the lineup for Wednesday's Game Three of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Detroit Red Wings.

A two-time Stanley Cup champion, Sydor hasn't played since March 31 against the New York Rangers. He has been a healthy scratch the previous 18 contests.

"You're always looking for someone experienced, and Darryl has had a great season for us," Therrien said. "But in the meantime, we've got a lot of depth with defensemen and we liked what we saw from our defensemen, so we didn't have any reason to change.

"It's a different story now. We certainly can use the experience on the ice and on the bench."

The Penguins hope the addition of Sydor will provide some type of a lift in a series in which they have been completely dominated. Pittsburgh has been outscored, 7-0, in the first two games.

Sydor, who turned 36 on May 13, registered one goal and 12 assists in 74 games this season.
