Penguins, Fleury file for arbitration

Jun 13, 2008 - 8:08 PM PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- The Pittsburgh Penguins filed for salary arbitration with goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury on Friday.

Fleury, 23, helped the Penguins reach the Stanley Cup Finals this past season before losing to the Detroit Red Wings in six games. He made 55 saves in Pittsburgh's thrilling 4-3 triple-overtime win in Game Five and went 15-10 with a 2.30 goals-against average in the postseason.

Arbitration hearings will take place from July 20-August 4. As a result of the filing, the Penguins retain Fleury's rights, and he will not become a restricted free agent on July 1.

"Marc-Andre has done a tremendous job for us," general manager Ray Shero said. "By filing for salary arbitration, it gives us extra time to continue to negotiate a contract with Marc-Andre. We remain committed to negotiating a contract with him in the near future."

Fleury, who went 19-10-2 with a 2.33 GAA during the regular season, was the No. 1 overall selection in the 2003 NHL draft.
